ASSIGNMENT: CELL PHONE ACCESSORIES FOR POP

Assigned JANUARY 20, 2018 | Due FEBRUARY 3, 2018

THE BRIEF:

A Point of Purchase display is a long popular way to attract customer’s attention. They are large format images placed at the point of purchase in order to be more visible. You will see them in grocery stores, jewelry stores, department stores, mall kiosks, and even in small businesses like restaurants and coffee shops.

Here are a few examples:

Point of Purchase imagery must be colorful, dynamic, and powerful to drive people to that spot and have them be excited to purchase the goods. Think graphic, think simple imagery with not so much detail as to need to be up close to read it. These images must grab someone from 30 – 50 feet away.

THE CLIENT

Our client is a small manufacturer of cell phone accessories. They carry everything from phone cases to fancy earplugs to wireless chargers. The stores are actually Kiosks that can be assembled quickly in a mall, or event setting and be self-contained. The image we need to create is going to be 40″ x 60″ tall and will be on both sides of the Kiosk.

This is a fashionable, hip, company who targets customers between late teens and early thirties. Let your work reflect that.

ASSIGNMENT INFO:

PEOPLE

People need to be clearly seen, or at least clearly identified. Strong colors in wardrobe, and simple print or no print to help keep the graphic nature of the image intact will help. Every detail of the wardrobe is going to be visible to those standing close to the print, so make sure shirts are tucked in correctly, buttons are buttoned, and wrinkles/crease etc… are looking sharp and clean.

Happy people are usually found in most of the POP because happy people spend more money (or something). Except for fashion. Sullen, aloof, and mildly unhappy models can be right at home in some fashion stores. Others will have models jumping and leaping in all sorts of gravity-defying poses. Choose wisely and remember that wardrobe is going to make a difference to how their ‘attitude’ is expressed.

STILL LIFE

Choosing still life or ‘product’ genre? Attention to detail must be absolutely dead on. If you are going to blow up something like a phone case to 30×40, it better have no flaws, and it better be lit in a way that it looks super cool. A boring shot of an iphone on a white background is not going to get the job done. Not for this client. Texture, light, shadow… all of these are so important in this type of shot. Make it rock.

VIDEO CLIPS

This is not a video clip assignment. Please do a still shot for this POP.

LIGHTING

Shadows can drive a certain kind of shot. Intensity in the lighting can draw the eyeballs. What won’t work is boring, or dull light. Look for edges, shapes, shadows, highlights, and speculars to bring the subject to life. Kicker lights, snoots and grids, and even color gels can help transform a mundane item into something special.
