ASSIGNMENT: ONE RED BALLOON

DECEMBER 23 | DUE JANUARY 9

ASSIGNMENT: ONE RED BALLOON

Assigned December 23, Due January 9, 2018

THE BRIEF:

This is a concept assignment and I only got two words for you…

Red.
Balloon.

Yep… that is your assignment… a Red Balloon.

Shoot them YOUR way, any way you want. I do not care what you do with them… but impress me.

IMPRESS YOURSELVES.

This is what we call a concept shot. There will be more, but this one will drive you nuts if you let it.

Have no fear that there are others that are worse… bwahahahaha.

Here’s the skinny…

I do not care about how you shoot the red balloon, or in what style or what you have as subject matter… only that red balloon features prominently in the shot.

The red balloon can be THE subject, or the subject can be interacting with the red balloon… or perhaps it is a vignette with a red ballon prominently featured… or even subtly featured but visible. Heh.

A recent inspiration for this assignment is this shot of Chris Rock by Jake Chessum.

Inspiration… (whoa, bucko… it is for inspiration only… heh.)

Yep… it has been done before. Now you do it your way, with your style… and better than it has ever been done before.

What makes a balloon so much fun?
What is the smallest denominator that we can find to say “balloon”?
What about reflections?

ASSIGNMENT INFO:

PEOPLE

If you are going to have a person in the photograph, make sure they are somehow engaged with the balloon. Whether playing with it, running in fear from it, or finding it as a gentle surprise, the engagement of the people with the balloon would be something I want you to feature.

STILL LIFE

No people? No problem.

Just make sure that the balloon stands out from the landscape, or environment it is in. The red should not blend into anything, but rather stick out brightly against the background you chose. The balloon is the star… treat it as such.

VIDEO CLIPS

A video story of a red balloon as it meanders through town, or place where you are. Treat the balloon as a hero, a traveler. Make it fun.

LIGHTING

Highlights will reflect from the balloon and this can be either a problem or a design choice. Your specular will tell us a lot about how the balloon was lit, so make sure you command that specular. Remember that the shape and size of that reflection will help define the shape and dimension of the balloon.
