ASSIGNMENT: TEXTURAL CONTRAST

ASSIGNMENT: TEXTURAL CONTRAST

THE BRIEF:

We want to see some contrast between textures on in the subject matter you choose. The type of assignment is up to you but I would like to make sure you understand the difference between a commercial image and a personal or art image – although, honestly I think that line is being diminished daily. Just make sure you can tell me what company or business would be using the image you make.

So this is almost a ‘free shoot’ with the very devilish point of the contrast. Two different surfaces or a textural contrast within a texture (green chairs above).

HERE’S A HANDY RESOURCE THAT MAY HELP YOU IN THE CLASSES THIS ONE ESPECIALLY.
Please feel free to print, but do not share. Thank you.

THE PARTICULARS:

  • Landscape or Portrait
  • Color or BW
  • People or still life
  • The composition should exploit the texture of the overall image as well as the texture of the subjects within.

THIS IS A CREATIVE ASSIGNMENT.

PEOPLE

Contrast is always a big part of portraiture. Skin tone, wardrobe, smooth against rough, rough against smooth… so many combinations that the human can provide a photographer for making images that show contrasting color, texture, and shape.

Have fun with this and make the images remind us what a joy texture can be. Especially when it surprises, delights, and entertains us.

STILL LIFE

Glass on rough wood. A rough shell on smooth rocks. Counterbalanced shapes that provide two textures in one graphic photograph. Textures are everywhere… we must look for light, reflection, contrasting surfaces (shiny against dull, shiny on rough, rough on shiny… so many choices.)

The point of the image is to make a photograph that brings out the contrast of textures within the subject you have chosen.

LIGHTING

How do we show texture? Side lighting usually… or a modified type of it. Texture is really just showing us highlights, shadows, peaks, peaks, and valleys. The more radical the angle, the more texture is revealed.
