“DON’T PUT ALL YOUR EGGS IN ONE BASKET”
Sounds like something we photographers say… “Don’t shoot all your images on one card…”
It means the same thing. Have more than one place to store and keep what is valuable to you in case the first place is faulty.
The basket breaks or the card gets lost.
This image is for the first page of an article in a children’s magazine. The story is inspirational, and very positive. The headline is “Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Basket… There’s a Whole World of Possibilities.”
Editorial lead for an article… means it has to rock!!!
And it has to be shot vertically (portrait) because most magazines (including this one) are portrait configuration.
In color, please.
And leave some room for cropping because if you shoot it to your camera viewfinder, there may not be any room for the AD to move your shot into a position that will not be hidden by the headline or the copy or any other typography they can be featuring on the editorial image.
My rule of thumb is to crop the way you like it in the camera, then take a giant step back to shoot the image. Room around the image is crucial for shooting magazine editorial. The AD’s and designers want some wiggle room to make the page ‘read’ exactly as they wish.
You will probably be doing this with some eggs, so be aware. And think outside the… uh… ‘the carton’ for this image. A basket of eggs is not gonna cut it, nor is a dozen eggs in a carton.
PLEASE… you want to establish the shot, the meaning of the shot, and illustrate the old saying with one image.
Yes, it can be conceptual. Yes, it can be still life. Yes, it can have a model in it (child, most likely).
