SUMMER 2021: 51: ASSIGNMENT FIFTY ONE: PREPARING YOURSELF FOR THE COMMITMENT

DUE JULY 19, 2022

This group is ready to start the planning for next year’s marketing campaign.

The shoot for this week is portfolio work. Shoot for your portfolio and present the work on the critique day with the following information:

1. Why you shot it for your portfolio.
2. Why you believe it should be in your portfolio.

Also this is the shot you may be using on the cover of your postcard, or the first image on your email campaign.

Make it a darn good one.

A few ideas:
Housewares.
Wine/Spirits
Jewelry on a clean set and jewelry on a propped set.
Food… make it killer.
Something very interesting in an interesting way.

Planning out the campaign:

What will you be doing next year to build a client list?

It is quite important to begin planning now, and with the holidays coming up, it is a great time to take a few hours to get it ready.

  1. EMail Campaign.
Establish an Account at Mailchimp, Campaign Monitor or Constant Contact.
I always recommend Mailchimp as it is free for a few hundred leads, and a couple of emails a month (more than you will need).

    My Favorites here:

    Flodesk (2500 list free)
    Email Octopus (also free)
    SendInBlue (Free plan is awesome)
Beehiiv (Free plan looks super cool)

    ALSO GOOD… BUT EXPENSIVE
    Mailchimp
    Campaign Monitor
    Constant Contact
    Vertical Response

    ALSO LOOK AT:
    Substack – sort of a newsletter/blog combination.
Ghost – also a kind of hybrid web/emailer/blog tool that looks pretty cool

  2. I use Mailchimp, but am considering moving it all over to Substack at the end of this enrollment period. Perhaps September 2022.
  3. Mailer or “Leave Behind” mailer.
Gather printing specs and printing costs for your first mailer.
I suggest something like a 6×9 postcard series (print 4 so you have them for the year. 1 per quarter.Things to consider: A Mailer will have room and space for address labels and stamp area.Research how much space is needed per card, or if the postcard printer provides a template for you.
  4. If you are going to forgo the postcard-style mailing and put it in an envelope, what costs will that add to the finished piece?
These can also then be used as a “leave behind” for client meetings and direct contact with possible clients.

    Printing Houses:
    Overnight Prints
    Vista Print
    Modern Postcard
    PS Prints
    Mixam

Will you be doing a single card to leave behind, or will you do a series… say, 3 -5 cards for different clientele?

  5. Brochure/Magazine
A popular way of showing more work is to create a small magazine or brochure-like piece for your work. Magazines can be done as pre-printed: You pay for a set amount to be printed and then mail/deliver them out.Print on Demand: The magazine lives online similar to a PDF, but can be printed if the recipient wishes to purchase it.

PDF format: The document is created for viewing on the web or devices. This can be done in Photoshop, InDesign, Affinity Publisher, Pages (Mac), or even Word.

From 8 pages to several dozen pages, these pieces have the ability to draw more engagement as they get passed around more than postcards. Figure that you will do one or two of these per year considering your budget, your client list, and your geographical region.

And remember, a PDF can be downloaded and shared with the original downloader’s friends and peers. URL’s to ISSU can be shared as well as linked from websites and blogs.

What will your larger form mailer/magazine plan be?

  6. Personal Projects:What personal projects are being defined for your first of the year work?
How do they work into your current planning?

Now we can look at a budget for getting these materials ready.

The nice thing about the printers mentioned is that you can do very short-run printing. Even as few as a hundred cards.

Create a budget by defining what you wish to spend, and then look at the options presented here.
Don’t forget stamps and envelopes, as well as a designer fee if you need one.

I recommend that the design of your brochure/magazine be simple and one you are able to manipulate for the next issue.

We will discuss these on the show for this assignment. Have your notes and ideas together.
Have your budget items together too… what is it going to cost for you to do what you are going to do?
